The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote the various aspects of international cinema in all its forms: as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue. The Festival also organizes retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.



International Juries of the 72nd Venice Film Festival
Four International Juries will assign the official awards of the 72nd Venice Film Festival :

- VENEZIA 72 (International competition of feature films, presented as world premieres)
Alfonso Cuarón (President), Elizabeth Banks, Emmanuel Carrère, Nuri Bilge Ceylan , Hou Hsiao-hsien, Diane Kruger, Francesco Munzi, Pawel Pawlikowski, Lynne Ramsay.
- ORIZZONTI : (An international competition dedicated to films that represent the latest aesthetic and expressive trends in international cinema) Jonathan Demme (President), Anita Caprioli, Fruit Chan, Alix Delaporte, Paz Vega.
- OPERA PRIMA : Saverio Costanzo (President), Charles Burnett, Roger Garcia, Natacha Laurent, Daniela Michel.
- VENEZIA CLASSICI (A selection of restored classic films and documentaries on cinema) : Francesco Patierno (President)

OUT OF COMPETITION : Important works by directors already established in previous editions of the Festival

French director Bertrand TAVERNIER is the recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Award of the 72nd Venice International Film Festival and will be awarded the acknowledgment on Tuesday 8th September. For the first time at the Venice Film Festival the recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement has been given “carte blanche“: Tavernier selected four rare films for the Venice Classics section he will personally introduce to the public before the screenings as Guest Director of the section.
