Each September, the International Mariachi Festival brings musicians and their fans to Guadalajara for an immersion in the glory of the mariachi. This Mexican fiesta highlights this symbol of nationalism and culture. The country's second-largest city is a mix of historic and modern architecture, the Teatro Degollado, a neoclassic treasure, is one of the best-preserved theaters in Latin America.

Its performance calendar blends world-class opera, ballet and symphony events with the annual International Mariachi Festival, when bands wearing silver-studded charro outfits grace the stage, often with the lush accompaniment of Jalisco's philharmonic orchestra.
Modern-day mariachi music has evolved from its early days as a way for farmers to entertain themselves at the end of a hard workday. Over the years, the original ensemble of violin, vihuela (a five-string guitar) and six-sting guitar has added trumpets, basses and today´s colorful costuming.

The International Mariachi Festival features galas, concerts, photo exhibitions & a grand parade in the historical center of Guadalajara. Some 500 mariachis perform at concert halls & street markets throughout the city, coming from as far away as Venezuela, Cuba, France, Australia and Belgium, demonstrating the popularity of mariachi music. Most events are free, however the evening galas in the Teatro Degollado are not.
