Thirty Years after the Exhibition 'Hommage à Ferrari', The Fondation Cartier Pour l'Art Contemporain will will focusing once agin on the World of Cars with the Exhibition 'Autophoto', dedicated to photography's relationship to the automobile. Since its invention, the automobile has reshaped our landscape and influenced the approach and practice of photographers.

Based on an idea by Xavier BARRAT and Philippe SECLIER, 'Autophoto' will present over 500 works from the Beginning of the 20th Century to the Present. It will invite to discover the many facets of Auomotive Culture (aesthetic, social, environmental, industrial) through the eyes of Photographers from around the World.
The exhibition will bring together over 90 Photographers including both famous and lesser-known figures such as Jacques Henri LARTIGUE, William EGGLESTON, Justine KURLAND and Jacqueline HASSINK, who have shown a fascination for the Automobile as a subject or have used it as a tool to take their pictures.

* Paving The Way - The Exhibition Rooms

* Auto-Portraits - The Exhibitions Rooms

Bringing togeher in this Gallery the many ways in which the Automobile has been represented in the work of great Photographers.... Whether commonplace as in the photographs of Bernard FUCHS, or iconic as in those of Raghubir SINGH of Raymond DEPARDON, cars have fascinated Photographers throughout the Twentith Century and into the Twenty-First.
* Photomobile Landscapes - The Exhibition Rooms

Many Photographers have exploited the aesthetic possibilities offered by the Automobile, using rear view mirrors and car windows to create picture frames and compelling visual effects. Some Photographers scrutinize our car-altered environment. Their landscape is no longer one of magnificient mountains and awe-inspiring canyons, but a world transformed by suburban housing complexes, parking lots, and highways...

* The Lives of the Automobile - The Exhibitions Rooms

This Gallery brings together a selection of works that focus on the car's role in History and Society; In the 1920's and 1950's, Robert DOISNEAU and Robert FRANK registered life in the Factory, from the machines and production lines to the worker's lives inside the production plant; More recently, Stéphane COUTURIER's deliberately distanced photograhs reflect the increasingly deshumanized nature of contemporaty industry... Finally, other Artists have created a visual analogy between the car and the Human Body.
* The Excavations - The Exhibition Rooms

While for some the Automobile is no longer the object of desire it once was, for others the Automotive Industry has entered a new era as it continues to evolve and adapt to new condition; Most of the work exhibited in this Gallery either directly consider some of the negative effects of the Automobile or metaphorically evoke its demise...
The final work of the Exhibition, a project by Melle SMETS and Joost VAN OONA entitled 'Turtle 1 - Building a Car in Africa' offers a possible solution to the accumulation of automotive waste, revealing the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the mechanics and craftsmen of Ghana in the development of a sturdy and flexible car made from recycled car parts.
